Abstract
This study was carried out on nurses at the university of Ilorin teaching hospital, the aim of the study is to assess the practices of healthcare waste management, identify the factors influencing healthcare waste management practices, and determine the level of adherence to proper healthcare waste management practices study was a descriptive study using stratified random sampling technique to select a total number of 150 nurses out of 242 nurses. The instrument for data collection was the use of questionnaires which contains 28 items. Only 150 respondents filled and returned the questionnaire within the stipulated time giving a response of about 100%. Thus, with the responses of the respondents and the mean value calculated, it could be inferred that the practice of healthcare waste management among nurses at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin is high among the nurses (74.7%), the factors influencing healthcare waste management practices are unavailability of bins, inadequate financial& human resources, inappropriate waste management& disposal system, lack of bins labeled with the biohazard symbol for the contagious waste and lack of trained personnel, the level of adherence to proper healthcare waste management practices is on the average i.e. 50%. Based on the findings it was recommended that nurses should ensure they adhere strictly to the available waste management& disposal system and also the hospital management should always make provision for bins labeled with the biohazard symbol for the contagious waste.
