Abstract
Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Attitude and perception of secondary school students of nursing as a career is therefore important as they are the future generation of nurses. This project work, therefore, evaluated the perception and attitudes of secondary school students towards nursing as a career in Ilorin grammar school, Ilorin, Kwara state. The objectives identified include assessing the perception of secondary school students toward nursing as a career, assessing the attitude of secondary school students toward nursing as a career and identifying factors influencing students’ perception of nursing as a career. A number of journals, articles and other literatures were reviewed to obtain information and develop facts about the project work. This research used descriptive survey to sample 103 students from Ilorin grammar school. Questionnaire was the research instrument used to gather data. 120 questionnaires were distributed out of which 116 were retrieved and 103 analyzed. Results of the project work showed that students have a positive perception of the nursing profession but a few of them still lack proper knowledge of the profession and the students also have a positive attitude towards nursing as a career although the perception of the students that nursing is a career for females may be a factor influencing nursing as a profession in grammar school Ilorin as knowledge on this area may not be sufficient. Therefore, various means of increasing the knowledge of nursing practices to better and ensure a positive attitude towards the profession should be established, Recommendations were made to nurses and the school.
