Abstract
Water pollution is a growing concern worldwide, with significant implications for public health and economic well-being. This study investigates the incidence and effects of water pollution on the residents of Ekeremor Local Government Area (LGA) Bayelsa Nigeria. Ekeremor LGA, located in the Niger Delta region, is characterized by its heavy reliance on water bodies for drinking water, agriculture, and fishing, making it highly susceptible to water pollution. The research employs a multi-faceted approach, combining field surveys, water quality assessments, health impact assessments, and economic analyses to comprehensively understand the extent and consequences of water pollution in the region. The findings reveal a disturbing prevalence of water pollution in Ekeremor LGA, primarily driven by poor waste domestic waste management, oil exploration activities, improper waste disposal, and agricultural runoff. The health effects of water pollution in the area are significant, with a rise in waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and gastroenteritis. Residents, particularly children and the elderly are at higher risk of suffering from these diseases due to their compromised immune systems. Furthermore, the economic ramifications are evident, as medical expenses related to waterborne illnesses strain household budgets, and lost productivity due to sickness affects the local economy. This study underscores the urgent need for effective water pollution mitigation strategies in Ekeremor LGA, including improved waste management practices, stricter environmental regulations, and increased community awareness. The findings emphasize the importance of safeguarding water resources for both public health and economic prosperity in this region. Addressing water pollution in Ekeremor LGA is crucial not only for the well-being of its residents but also for the sustainable development of the entire community....
