Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, the protein responsible for carrying oxygen in red blood cells. Hence this study was carried out to assess the level of knowledge and practice of sickle cell disease prevention among staffs in the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH). Among the objectives were to assess knowledge of sickle cell prevention among staff in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Ilorin, Kwara State, to assess the practice of sickle cell prevention among the staff of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Kwara State and to identify factors affecting sickle cell prevention among staff in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Kwara State. Relevant literatures from various authors on sickle cell disease and research on the practice of sickle cell prevention, factors affecting the prevention of sickle disease were reviewed. A descriptive survey design was used, 188 questionnaires were administered and retrieved by the researcher. Data collected was analyzed with the use of frequencies, percentages and are presented using frequency tables and charts. Relationship between variables were determined using chi-square with the level of significance set at 0.05 to determine level of statistical significance. The findings from the research showed that the staff have good knowledge of sickle cell disease and many of them heard about the disease from the hospital. It was concluded that there was no significant relationship between the level of education of staff and knowledge of sickle cell disease, recommendations were made that Management should continuously heath educate the staff on sickle cell disease, its causes, its effects, management and prevention and Nurses should ensure adequate health education and counseling of the staff on the causes and effects of sickle cell disease during visits to the hospital....
