Abstract
This study was carried out to assess the level of knowledge of viral haemorrhagic fevers among nurses working in the emergency units of UITH. Relevant literatures from various authors on and research on the knowledge of viral haemorrhagic fevers were reviewed. A descriptive survey design was used, 74 questionnaires were administered and 72 were filled and returned to the researcher. Data collected was analyzed with the use of frequencies, percentages and are presented using frequency tables and charts. Relationship between variables were determined using ANOVA with a level of significance set at 0.05 to determine the level of statistical significance. The findings from the research showed that 34.7% of the respondents strongly agreed that Viruses of Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers are transmitted through aerosol means hence they can be used as biological weapons of warfare, 59.7% of the respondents strongly agreed that The health workers should be knowledgeable on epidemic preparedness plan activities, 69.4% of the nurses strongly agreed to No specific treatment exists for most viral haemorrhagic fevers, the antiviral drug ribavirin (Rebetol, Virazole) might be used in some cases, 25% agreed, 2.7% disagreed, while another 2.7% strongly disagreed 44.4% strongly agreed to the cornerstone of therapy for all viral haemorrhagic fevers is judicious fluid and electrolyte management, 23.6% agreed, 16.6% disagreed, while 15.2% strongly disagreed. And it concluded and recommended that the government should equip health facilities with adequate healthcare delivery systems and standard medical equipment. The hospital management should make use of standardized diagnostic pathways to tackle the delay in laboratory results. Nurses should always take all preventive measures against viral haemorrhagic fevers....
