Abstract
This study was on Assessment of Exclusive Breastfeeding Practice and Associated Factors Among Mothers in Ilorin Metropolis. The objectives of the study were to know the knowledge of mothers on exclusive breastfeeding, to assess the practice of mothers exclusive breastfeeding, to determine the socio-demographic factors that influence the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers, and to identify the socio-cultural factors that influence the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers. Quantitative research design using a descriptive method was used for the study. A sample size of 92 respondents was used for the study which was calculated from the target population of 120 using Taro Yamane (1967). A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents and data were analyzed using SPSS 22. Result shows that less than half (39.1%) of the respondents understand exclusive breastfeeding as breastfeeding a child for 6 months with breast milk only except for prescribed drugs. It was also noted that the majority of the respondents (65.2%) respondents practiced exclusive breastfeeding while less than half (34.8%) of the respondents did not practice exclusive breastfeeding. The major socio-cultural factors that influence the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers were found to be cultural pressure such as breastfeeding outside prevents them from exclusively breastfeeding their babies (80.4%) as well as the belief that their breasts can become saggy/flat when they exclusively breastfeed their children (46.7%)....
