Prevalence and outcome of preterm birth at General Hospital, Idah Kogi state from January 2017 - December 2022

Abstract
Preterm birth is the single most important determinant of adverse infant outcomes in terms of survival and quality of life, approximately 15 million are born preterm every year that is more than 1 in 10 babies. This study aims to assess the prevalence and outcome of preterm birth at General Hospital (GHI) Idah, Kogi State from January 2017-December 2022. The research is a retrospective study, and a checklist was used to collect data and variables used include rate of occurrence, Gestational age, maternal age, and outcome of the condition. A total of 258 records were sourced and investigations were made using patients' backgrounds. Analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics and hypotheses were tested using chi-square test tool. The highest prevalence of preterm birth at General Hospital Idah (GHI) within the period of 2017 to 2022 was in 2018 with 56(21.7%) preterm births and the highest in the month of September 2018 with total 9 (3.5%) preterm births, while the lowest incidence was in the year 2021& 2022 with 30 (11.6%) preterm births each and the lowest in the month of January 2017 and October 2021 with a total of 1(0.4%) preterm birth each. Majority, 158 (61.2%) of the preterm babies were discharged alive, 73 (28.3%) dead, while 27 (10.5%) were referred all through the period under study from January 2017 to December 2022. The findings have observed that there was a significant relationship between the gestational age of babies and the outcome of preterm births. Thus, the gestational age of babies will often determine the outcome of preterm births....
