Abstract
Exclusive breastfeeding is essential for infant health and development. However, nursing mothers often encounter various challenges in sustaining this practice. This study aims to identify and analyze the perceived challenges faced by nursing mothers attending the immunization clinic, the University of Delta Teaching Hospital, Agbor. A descriptive design was conducted among 67 nursing mothers using a structured questionnaire. The survey gathered information on demographic characteristics, breastfeeding practices, and perceived challenges. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic content analysis. The study included nursing mothers with mean age of 18-30 (62.7%), 50.7% had tertiary level of education and 30.7% were civil servants. The perceived challenge was diverse and multifaceted. The most common reported challenges included sore or cracked nipples (64.2%) and difficulty in breastfeeding in public (61.2%). These challenges encompassed the challenge of insufficient milk supply (41.6%). Other challenges include workplace issues, cultural factors and socioeconomic factors. The study also shows that there is no significant relationship between the educational factor of nursing mothers attending the immunization clinic of University of Delta Teaching Hospital and the perceived challenges of exclusive breastfeeding and there is also a significant relationship between the culture of nursing mothers attending the immunization clinic of university of Agbor teaching hospital and perceived challenges of exclusive breastfeeding. This study reveals that nursing mothers attending the immunization clinic face a range of perceived challenges in exclusive breastfeeding. These findings underscore the importance of tailored support and education programs within clinical settings to address and overcome these barriers. By addressing these challenges, healthcare providers can play a pivotal role in promoting and sustaining exclusive breastfeeding practices, ultimately benefiting the health and well-being of infants....
