Abstract
Neonatal jaundice (NNJ) or neonatal hyperbilirubinemia results from elevated total serum bilirubin (TSB) and clinically manifests as yellowish discoloration of the skin, sclera, and mucous membrane. The study was carried out to assess the knowledge of mothers on the causes and effects of neonatal jaundice in General Hospital, Idah, Kogi State. Among the objectives were to assess the level of mothers' knowledge on the causes and effects of neonatal jaundice at General Hospital, Idah,  to evaluate if mothers'' level of education affects their knowledge of neonatal jaundice and to investigate if parity affects mothers'' knowledge on neonatal jaundice. Relevant literatures from various authors on neonatal jaundice were reviewed. A descriptive survey design was used, 100 questionnaires were administered and retrieved by the researcher. Relationship between variables were determined using chi-square with the level of significance set at 0.05 to determine the level of statistical significance. The findings from the research showed that the mothers have poor knowledge on the causes and effects of neonatal jaundice and many of them heard about the condition from the hospital, they know neonatal jaundice to be yellowish discoloration of the eyes, skin and lips in a newborn (78%), and yellow fever was strongly agreed by the mothers as the cause of neonatal jaundice (36%), 48% of them believed neonatal jaundice can leads to brain damage, eating of hot-natured food causing jaundice was disagreed by 73% of the mothers, and the majority of them (83%) also attended antenatal more than 8 times, while the level of education and parity of the mothers influence their knowledge of neonatal jaundice. It was concluded and recommended that nurses should seek knowledge through various research works to improve the knowledge of mothers on neonatal jaundice....
