Abstract
This research was conducted to assess the knowledge of mothers on the effect of substance abuse on fetal development in selected PHC in Ika south. It informed the health officers on the understanding of mothers regarding the effect of substance abuse on fetal development. Substance refers to a compound, drug or chemical that causes alteration or change in the physiological or psychological well-being of the user. Among the objectives was to determine the mother's knowledge on substance abuse and its effects on fetal development. Furthermore, to assess if the mother's educational level will have an influence on her knowledge of the effect of substance abuse on fetal development and to identify factors contributing to the use of substances among mothers attending PHC at the selected facilities. Many medical and allied literatures on substance abuse were reviewed to develop more facts for this project. This research uses descriptive survey to sample mothers attending selected PHC in Ika south. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 80 questionnaires were distributed and retrieved. The findings revealed that 80% of mothers have heard of substance abuse and more than half of the respondents have good knowledge, findings of this study showed that the educational level of mothers influences their knowledge on the effect of substance abuse on fetal development also revealed that the factors contributing to the abuse of substance among mothers include self-medications (73.8%). In conclusion, the study revealed that there is good knowledge about substance abuse among the mothers sampled in the study area., recommendations were made to nurses and other healthcare personnel to health educate pregnant women around them about the need to avoid substance abuse because of its effect on fetal development and teach them about Compliance to their drug regimen....
