Abstract
Failure to thrive is a common condition that is often multi-factorial in etiology and the majority of cases are due to psycho-social problems rather than organic diseases. This research study was a descriptive survey carried out to assess the level of knowledge of mothers of children aged birth-5 years regarding failure to thrive in Paediatric Outpatient Clinic, University of Delta Teaching Hospital, Agbor, Delta State. The objectives of the study were to determine the mother's knowledge level on factors responsible for failure to thrive in children aged birth-5 years, to determine if parental socioeconomic status will cause failure to thrive in children birth-5 years. 52 respondents were used for the research. The information from the research was manually analyzed and presented using frequency tables and bar charts. Hypotheses were tested using chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis revealed that most of the respondents 80%  agreed that they know what failure to thrive children is, and 20% do not know. On eating an egg among children is a taboo in their community, 76% of them disagreed to the statement. 86% agreed that they have been health-educated on things that caused FTT in children. And there was no significant difference between sociocultural factors and mothers' knowledge of the causes of failure to thrive among children birth-5 years. Recommendations were made that The nurses should always support mothers whose children age birth-5 years suffering from failure to thrive with adequate information on preventive measures of the failure to thrive in the hospital and Mothers should cooperate with the health providers as much as possible as this will give the best support in the management of the failure to thrive in their children....
