Abstract
Diarrhoea disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old and is responsible for killing around 525,000 children every year. This research was designed to assess the knowledge and attitude of mothers on the causes and effects of diarrhoea among under-five children in Yagba West Local Government, Kogi state. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of mothers on the causes and effects of diarrhoea, their attitude, the source of information they rely on, and if their socioeconomic status and educational level influence their knowledge on the causes and effect of diarrhoea among under-five. A descriptive non-experimental, cross-sectional research design was used to evaluate the research problem. Data was collected using a self-structured questionnaire which was distributed among 100 respondents. It was analyzed using frequency tables, and chi-square and presented using charts and tables. Hypotheses were tested using chi-square at 0.05 level of significance The findings from the research showed that the level of knowledge of mothers on the causes and effects of diarrhoea among under five children was good (95%), and 77% of mothers had a positive attitude while 23% had a negative attitude towards the causes and effect of diarrhoea. And also the sources of information mothers rely on to acquire knowledge on the causes and effects of diarrhoea were healthcare workers (64.6%). In Conclusion, it can be deduced that the majority of the mothers had good knowledge and a positive attitude on the causes and effects of diarrhoea.
