Abstract
This study investigated the pre-adoption and use of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology among commercial drivers in Niger State, Nigeria. The study employed a descriptive research design, utilizing a structured questionnaire to collect data from a sample of sixty (60) registered commercial drivers in NSTA in Minna. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of commercial drivers have a positive perception of GPRS technology and believe that it has the potential to improve their communication, navigation, and safety. They are also confident in their ability to adopt and use GPRS technology effectively. The study's theoretical framework was based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Diffusion of Innovations theory. The study found that the majority of commercial drivers agree that GPRS technology is essential for improving communication and navigation. Additionally, the study found that adopting GPRS will enhance the overall safety of commercial driving activities. Furthermore, the study found that the potential benefits of GPRS, such as real-time traffic updates and route optimization, are appealing to commercial drivers. These findings suggest that GPRS technology has significantly benefited the commercial transportation industry in Niger State, Nigeria. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made: transportation companies should invest in implementing GPRS technology in their commercial vehicles, transportation companies should provide training and support to commercial drivers on how to use GPRS technology effectively, government agencies should develop and enforce regulations that promote the safe and effective use of GPRS technology in commercial transportation, and further research should be conducted to investigate the long-term impact of GPRS technology on the commercial transportation industry in Niger state, Nigeria. ...
