Abstract
This research critically examined the health records storage and retrieval practices of staff at Delta State Teaching Hospital Oghara. The problem statement focused on issues arising from a lack of critical examination of health records collection, storage, and retrieval practices, including the use of untrained personnel, incompetence, and inadequate accommodation. Three research questions were formulated to achieve the study objectives. The null hypothesis stated no definite relationship between health records storage and retrieval practices in health institutions the alternative acknowledged a significant relationship. A descriptive survey design was used with a population comprising health records staff and other employees from four hospital departments. Random sampling selected 108 participants. Data collection relied on a self-structured questionnaire with personal data in Section A and aspects of the problem in Section B. Percentage frequency distribution tables analyzed data. The study found the hospital primarily uses manual storage (76%), manual sorting for retrieval by hospital number (82%) or patient name (4%), and interviews (60%) for data collection. Major factors affecting health records collection were lack of patient cooperation, insufficient papers for registration, and patient health status. For storage, major factors were a lack of computer-literate staff, poor lighting, untrained personnel, poor ventilation, and a lack of knowledge of departmental policies and procedures. Recommendations based on the findings are that hospital management should utilize professional health records officers for duties and ensure good ventilation and lighting for the records department....
