Abstract
The purpose of this project is to identify the legal rights and obligations given to foreign observers under Nigerian Law, to examine foreign election observation in advancing democracy in Nigeria, and also to investigate the role of foreign observers in deterring election Malpractice in Nigeria. the paper will highlight relevant theoretical theories that are appropriate to the study such as social responsibility theory, democratic theory and legal formalism theory. This project utilizes a mixed-methods approach, including both qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The qualitative data has been obtained through observation and questionnaires from foreign observers who have participated in previous Nigerian elections. The quantitative data will be collected through questionnaires administered to Nigerian voters and election officials, the research also used purposive sampling techniques and taro yamane to determine the sample size. The study analyzes the impact of foreign observers on various aspects of the electoral process, such as voter education, voter registration, and the conduct of elections using thematic Analysis. It will also examine the challenges faced by foreign observers in carrying out their duties, as well as the strategies they have used to overcome these challenges. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on international election observation and provide insight into the effectiveness of foreign observers in ensuring the credibility of elections in Nigeria. The study will also provide recommendations for improving the role of foreign observers in future Nigerian elections and enhancing the overall credibility of the electoral process. One significant aspect of the foreign observers'''' role is to ensure adherence to international standards for free and fair elections. Their presence helps minimize the risk of electoral malpractices, fraud, or irregularities, fostering public confidence in the electoral process....
