Abstract
This work reports the synthesis and study of the effect of alkali on the foam stability of lemon leave surfactant for hydrocarbon recovery. The lemon leave was found to contain 53.4% moisture, 2.08% of acid value and 202.45 saponification value. The synthesis of surfactant yields about 13.64 g and made to active stock concentration of 13.64%. The foam ability and stability of surfactant foam was investigated using Design Expert Software to obtain optimized conditions of surfactant-brine formulation. Out of the 13 different experimental formulations conducted, a 0.39:0.24% surfactant: brine optimized ratio was obtained that produced 0.8 cm and 295 sec for foam ability and foam stability. At this optimized ratio, the effect of monovalent (NaOH) and divalent alkali (Ca(OH)2) on the foamability and foam stability shows that maximum foamability (0.75 cm) and stability (450 sec) was obtained with NaOH at 0.3 and 0.2 M, respectively. However, Ca(OH)2 at every concentration records no foam volume and stability, signifying a detrimental effect. The foam morphology investigation shows adequate foam bubble size within normal distribution. Thus, the study validates the possibility of using lemon leave’s surfactant for hydrocarbon recovery....
