Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activity of the aqueous leaf extract of Ziziphus jujube. Ziziphus lotus is a spiny fruit shrub and a member of Rhamnaceae. It grows in trufts that are a few meters in diameter and up to two meters high, and is commonly called Magariya in northern Nigeria. Phytochemical screening was done using standard methods. It revealed the presence of diverse ranges of bioactive compounds, including phenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and glycosides. Aqueous Extract shows significant (p0.05) DPPH radical scavenging activity, with% inhibition increasing with concentration. Maximum% inhibition for DPPH (11.53 ± 0.005), ABTS (30.44 ± 1.47), and H2O2 (27.68 ± 1.39) was observed at 100 µg/ml. Gallic Acid used as a positive control, gallic acid shows DPPH radical scavenging activity, with% inhibition increasing with concentration. Maximum% inhibition for DPPH (65.38 ± 1.46), ABTS (69.62 ± 1.36) and H2O2 (63.39 ± 1.39) observed at 100 µg/ml. The aqueous extract shows significantly lower (p0.05) DPPH, ABTS and H2O2 radical scavenging activity compared to gallic acid at all concentrations. The extract exhibited slight antioxidant activity as evidenced related to the activities carried out using DPPH radical Scavenging activity, ABTS and H202. Where a standard was used, which is garlic acid, known for its antioxidant activity, which shows significantly higher antioxidant activity than the plant extract....
