Abstract
The emergence and rapid proliferation of new media have significantly transformed the social dynamics of youth in contemporary society, particularly within academic environments. This study investigates the influence of new media on the social lives of students at the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa (FPN), focusing on how platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube shape communication patterns, cultural values, interpersonal relationships, and overall well-being. Adopting a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from a sample of 382 students selected using simple random sampling techniques. The Taro Yamane formula was employed to determine the sample size, while data analysis was conducted using simple percentages, frequencies, and tables. Findings revealed that new media is deeply embedded in the daily routines of FPN students, with most engaging daily, especially on messaging and video-sharing platforms. While new media enhances connectivity, access to information, and awareness of global issues, it also contributes to cyberbullying, addiction, misinformation, and altered perceptions of identity and relationships. Approximately 47.1% of respondents reported feeling pressure to maintain an ideal online image, and more than one-third indicated negative impacts on their mental health. This study concludes that while new media offers significant benefits, its overuse or misuse can lead to adverse effects on students’ social behavior and academic performance. Recommendations include integrating digital literacy into the curriculum, promoting responsible usage, and establishing support systems to mitigate the negative consequences of new media consumption. The findings contribute to the growing discourse on digital media and youth development in Nigerian tertiary institutions and provide a foundation for future research on media effects in sub-Saharan African contexts....
