Abstract
The paper critically analyses awareness of the dangers of teenage pregnancy and motherhood among teenage mothers in Ika South Local Government. Teenage pregnancy and motherhood have become an important health issue. A great number of countries experience this phenomenon, both developed and developing pregnant teenagers face many of the obstetrics issues as other older women. Also, most teenage girls are not able to cope with some challenges that come with motherhood. The major objectives of the paper are: to determine if teenagers are aware of the dangers of teenage pregnancy and motherhood, to determine the factors that predispose teenagers to pregnancy and child bearing, to examine if teenagers are aware of the various methods of preventing pregnancy, to determine if teenagers whose cultural background encourages early marriage are more at risk, to determine if teenage girls whose fathers have left home at their tender ages are more at risk of teenage pregnancy. Concerning methodology, both secondary and primary sources of data were used for the study. A survey research design was used with a sample size of 100 teenage mothers in the local government. Data was analyzed and represented using percentages and frequency tables. Key findings from the study showed that the Majority of the teenage mothers in Ika local government are not aware of the dangers of teenage pregnancy. The factors that predispose teenagers to pregnancy and childbearing in Ika South Local government area of Delta state include but not limited to lack of education on safe sex, cultural beliefs/traditions, pressure from peers/mothers early puberty, influence of drugs and absence of parents.  The study will design interventions for teenage girls to make the transition from adolescence to adulthood without having an unplanned birth....
