Abstract
Recently, green chemistry has been of interest to researchers all over the world. The study investigated the effect of green chemistry activities in fostering senior secondary school chemistry students’ motivation and understanding of carbon (IV) oxide production. The sample was drawn from two schools in Shomolu local government area of Lagos state. The pre-test, post-test, quasi-experimental design was applied to test how green chemistry activities can foster students’ motivation and understanding of carbon dioxide production. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated and analyzed with the application of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS Version 20) at 0.05 significance level. Two research instruments: the Chemistry Understanding Test (CUT) and the Chemistry Motivation Questionnaire (CMQ) were used to obtain responses from the students. Sixty (60) students from two schools were selected and assigned to the control group (N40) and experimental group (N20) and the results of their responses were used for the analysis. Data collected were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to answer the research questions and hypotheses. The study revealed that green chemistry activities significantly enhanced students’ performance in carbon (IV) oxide production. Also, it revealed that there was an increase in students’ level of motivation towards chemistry when exposed to green chemistry activities. The study recommended among others that NERDC should swiftly develop a green chemistry curriculum which will enhance students’ performance in chemistry in both local and international examinations....
