Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the knowledge of mothers on the management of sickle cell disease in children in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Ilorin, Kwara State. The topic was introduced and works of literature of related authors were reviewed using journals and internet research. A descriptive research design was used and a convenient sampling technique was used to select fifty (50) respondents and self-developed structured questionnaire which contain 23 items which were divided into three sections. Data were collected, collated and analyzed using frequency tables, percentage, bar chart, pie chart and chi-square used to test research hypotheses. The validity of the instruments was tested using faced and content validity and shown to the expert in the field of Paediatric Nursing as well as a project supervisor and a pilot study was carried out on five (5) respondents representing ten percent (10%) of respondents outside the study group before the questionnaire was administered to the target population to test the reliability of the instrument. Findings reviewed that 72% of respondents have knowledge about sickle cell disease in children. Also, hypotheses tested on the influence of mothers’ education on the management of sickle disease in children reviewed that calculated value is greater than the tabulated value which means there is a significant relationship between mothers’ education and their management of sickle cell disease in children why the tabulated value is greater than the calculated value on the influence of mothers’ religion on the management of sickle cell disease in children. So the recommendation was made that health education should be given to enlighten mothers’ on the causes, prevention and management of sickle cell disease in children. ...
