The role of agricultural policies in alleviation of rural poverty - case study of Kano state agricultural and rural development authority (KNARDA)

Abstract
The issues of poverty and measures to reduce its incidence have remained at the front burner of government policies worldwide in the last two decades. Specifically, the governments at various levels in Nigeria have introduced different poverty alleviation programmes. The study, therefore, examined these programmes in Nigeria. The study found that there is no correlation between most poverty alleviation programmes and the level of poverty. The researchers recommended a more integrated strategy that will treat sectoral priority in both urban and rural areas. In Kano state KNARDA has worked tirelessly to ensure rural dwellers' empowerment and poverty alleviation in rural places of Kano state, however, this objective is still not satisfied due to some problems mitigating the full implementation of the authorities programmes. It is, therefore, recommended that in order to achieve these objectives of KNARDA, the authority needs to cross-check its activities and ensure full management of resources and minimize the level of corruption within the staff of KNARDA. If all these recommendations are adequately implemented, there is every chance the authority will reduce a greater percentage of rural poverty in Kano state. ...
