Abstract
Non-pharmacological methods have unique advantages to relieving pain that medications do not have such as giving the patients a more active role in managing their pain. There are many types of non-pharmacological methods that vary amongst heat/cold, distraction, massage and relaxation. Nurses must have a great knowledge of non-pharmacological methods to practice them effectively. In addition, nurses'' own attitudes greatly affect the way they treat a patient's pain. This study was aimed at assessing the knowledge and practice of non-pharmacological pain management among Nurses working in Accident and Emergency Units of UITH. A simple random sampling technique was used and the sample size was determined using Taro Yamane formula. Fifty (50) Nurses working in the Accident and Emergency Units of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin were the target population for the study. The research instrument used was a self-developed structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using tables such as frequency tables and inferential statistics with the use of chi-square. The results showed that Nurses’ level of knowledge on non-pharmacological pain management was high at 72.0% and also a higher proportion 54.0% had good practices of non-pharmacological pain management. Furthermore, the study revealed there was a significant relationship between Nurses’ knowledge of non-pharmacological pain management and practices among patients and also between Nurses’ knowledge on non-pharmacological pain management and practices among patients. The study recommended that nurses should reinforce their knowledge on non-pharmacological pain management by attending training and continuous medical education on non-pharmacological pain management.
