Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a term that encompasses a series of inherited blood disorders, where there are abnormalities in the genes that code the hemoglobin beta-subunit. It affects the blood cells, causing incidents of''sickling'' which produce incidents of pain and other signs. It predominantly affects people of African, Indiana and Arab ancestry. The study assessed the knowledge of the causes and prevention of sickle cell disease among secondary school students. The research aims to understand if age and educational level influence students'' understanding of this hereditary blood disorder. A cross-sectional survey design was employed to collect data from a diverse sample of secondary school students. The survey instrument assessed students'' knowledge about the factors contributing to sickle cell disease and its prevention. Preliminary findings indicate a consistent level of awareness and understanding of the disease across different age groups within the secondary school population. Additional curricula showed no significant difference in knowledge based on students'' educational levels and 64% of parents were middle-income earners who meet the average child's needs. The study concludes that policymakers and educators are encouraged to consider these results when formulating health education policies within secondary school systems, aiming for a uniform approach that caters to the diverse student population. It is recommended that the students who are knowledgeable as regards SCD, serve as peer educators in terms of sharing information with their classmates. The educational system should integrate comprehensive education about sickle cell disease into the curriculum, nurses  should collaborate closely with school health programs to integrate sickle cell education into the curriculum, and the government should advocate for policies that mandate the inclusion of sickle cell education in school curricula...
