Abstract
This study investigates the utilization of social media as a marketing tool among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. The research aims to examine the extent to which SMEs in the region use social media for marketing purposes, the types of social media platforms used, the frequency of usage, and the challenges faced in utilizing these platforms. Furthermore, the study explores the perceived effectiveness of social media in helping SMEs achieve their marketing goals, such as increasing brand awareness, customer engagement, and sales. A descriptive research design was adopted for the study, with a sample size of 100 SMEs selected from Owerri using the Yaro Yamane formula. Data was collected through structured questionnaires administered to business owners and managers. The results were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods to test the hypotheses and determine the relationship between social media utilization and the marketing performance of SMEs. Findings of the study reveal that social media has become an essential marketing tool for SMEs in Owerri, with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp being the most widely used platforms. While the majority of SMEs report that social media has positively impacted their business growth, challenges such as a lack of expertise, time, and financial constraints hinder optimal usage. Additionally, social media's effectiveness in achieving marketing goals varies, with businesses citing both positive and limited results depending on their strategies and resources. The study concludes that SMEs should invest in developing social media marketing skills, streamline their social media strategies, and allocate sufficient resources to overcome the challenges they face.
