Abstract
This study was on the assessment of knowledge and practice of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers in Randagi community, Birnin Gwara Local Government, Kaduna State.  Quantitative research design using a descriptive method was used for the study. A sample size of 92 respondents was used for the study which was calculated from the target population of 120 using Taro Yamane (1967). A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents and data were analyzed using SPSS 25.  Result shows that less than half (39.1%) of the respondents understand exclusive breastfeeding as breastfeeding a child for 6 months with breast milk only, except for prescribed drugs. It was also noted that the majority of the respondents (65.2%) practiced exclusive breastfeeding, while less than half (34.8%) of the respondents did not practice exclusive breastfeeding. The major socio-cultural factors that influence the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers were found to be cultural pressure, such as breastfeeding outside, which prevents them from exclusively breastfeeding their babies (80.4%), as well as the belief that their breasts can become saggy/flat when they exclusively breastfeed their children (46.7%). In conclusion, recommendations were made that the Community Health Practitioners should provide adequate health education on exclusive breastfeeding for mothers of childbearing age, mothers should exclusively breastfeed infants for the child's first six months to achieve optimal growth, development, and health and the government should pass strict policies concerning exclusive breastfeeding...
