Abstract
Stylistics is the study and interpretation of literature and texts from linguistic and literary perspectives. This work was done to examine the stylistic analysis of selected short stories in Jasper Onuekwusi's The Triumphant Return (1998) and Chimamanda Adichie's The Thing around Your Neck (2009). The linguistic features have been used by the authors to pass some messages across to the readers and society. The theory of linguistic analysis which asserts that the functional nature of language is reflected in its internal structure, especially in its semantic and syntactic organization was adopted for the study while a functional approach was adopted as the research method because of its cognizance of the stylistic function, effect and thematic significance of linguistic features within a literary text. The stylistics tools employed were morphology, graphology, phonology, syntax, lexico-semantics, and point of view. After applying these tools to the selected short stories in the two texts, it was discovered that language is an integral part of any work of art and that the success of a work depends on how the writer has been able to manipulate language. Onuekwusi and Adichie had effected changes through a systemic use of language which helped a better understanding of their works though to varying extents. The study recommended further studies into other aspects of the text which had not been worked on such as"A feminist, linguistic and thematic analysis of the novels"....
