Online hate speech and offline action - implication on democratic consolidation in Kano metropolis

Abstract
Nigerians have started using social media in recent years to voice their views and discuss national issues due to the freedom of access and use. Recent events have shown that Nigerians' conversation on social media, notably Facebook and Twitter, is dominated by the usage of abusive and filthy comments. With a focus on its effects on democratic consolidation during election campaigns, the study examines online hate space and offline action. A quantitative survey and content analysis were used to explore the opinions and comments that criticize a person's religious, political, regional, or ethnic affiliation. The study was founded on the technological determinism theory. Only 370 of the 384 distributed questionnaires were actually retrieved. The study's findings showed that Hate speech is often used on Twitter and Facebook. Regional hate speech, ethnic hate speech, religious hate speech, and political hate speech make up the majority of hate speech, and Facebook is a popular medium for these types of hate speech. Political and hateful discourse predominates on Twitter. The availability of the media, ignorance of the law, and entrenched prejudices between ethnic nationalities in the nation are factors that contribute to hate speech on social media platforms during election campaigns in the Kano metropolis. The effects of hate speech on the consolidation of democracy include security breaches, racial and religious tensions, and escalating political tension. Political, regional, racial, and religious hate speech can be effectively weaponized they have the potential of causing post-election violence....
