Abstract
This research work was conducted for the sole purpose of measuring the concentration of some trace elements in some water samples within Yenagoa and Ogbia Local Government in Bayelsa State. For this purpose thirty (30) samples were collected from six different communities (Imiringi, Ogbia, Onuebum, Elebele, Swali, and Otuoke). These water samples were collected from an underground borehole. Atomic absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) was used to determine dissolved analytes in aqueous samples after suitable filtration and evaporation prior to the analysis, the water samples were pre-concentrated and the residue dissolved in 0.1mHNO3. The analytes measured include iodine and magnesium. The highest concentration of iodine was detected in Swali, while the highest concentration of magnesium is detected in Onuebum. The concentration of iodine was found to be higher than the WHO in all the communities, while magnesium in most of the community like Elebele was found to be at the permissible limit. It was therefore concluded that proper water treatment procedure which will reduce the elements above safe limits should be embarked on which will reduce the accumulation of these nutrients in both humans and animals. ...
