Abstract
Women and children die daily from the scourge of maternal and infant/ mortality due to the poor primary health care system in most rural communities and as such, this study investigated the factors that influence the patronage of traditional birth attendants in Umuowa community, Orlu local government area by women and mothers. A descriptive research design was employed for the study, using quantitative methods of data collection. The sample size was selected through random sampling technique and a total of 254 questionnaires were distributed to the women and mothers, who were currently attending antenatal and/or postnatal with Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) and were residents in the Umuowa community. The research instrument used by the researcher was a self-designed questionnaire, which after distribution recorded a response rate of 98% (250 copies). Findings revealed that the majority of the women and mothers had exclusively utilized TBAs facility. Consequently, the outcome of the study indicates that some women resort to TBAs assistance for spiritual reasons. Also, respondents that had exclusively used the services of Traditional Birth Attendants in their communities were 90.4% while 9.6% of the respondents had did not exclusively utilize TBAs. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that the TBAs should be given more training to be aware that they are not illegal, so that their work does not go underground and becomes dangerous. There should be an integration of TBAs and the health centers as it is practiced in China to deal with the spiritual aspect of health care delivery which makes many people patronize TBAs. ...
