Awareness of the use of nephrotoxic agents as a risk factor for acute kidney injury in Naval Medical Centre Lagos

Abstract
The purpose of the study is to find out the awareness of the use of nephrotoxic agents as a risk factor for AKI in naval medical center Vitoria Island, Lagos, Lagos State. The data was collected through the distribution of questionnaires among personnel of Naval Medical Center, Victoria Island Lagos State. The findings showed that 48(47.1%) of the personnel of naval medical centre strongly agreed, 38(37.3%) agreed, 6(5.9%) strongly disagreed and 10(9.8%) disagreed that ibuprofen, tramadol and diclofenac are nephrotoxic drugs the finding also showed that 79(77.5%) of the respondents strongly agreed, 22(21.6%) agreed and 1(1.0%) strongly disagreed that agent like mercury in creams and soaps, monkey tail are toxic to the body. The findings showed that 52(51.0%) of the naval medical personnel strongly agreed, 49(48.0%) agreed, 1(1.0%) strongly disagreed that natural toxins in herbal concoctions are nephrotoxic. The findings also showed that 50(49.0%) 0f the medical personnel strongly agreed, 45(44.1%) agreed, 3(2.9%) strongly disagreed and 4(3.9%) disagreed that indiscriminate use of mixtures orthodox drugs soft drink can cause AKI. Three hypotheses were analyzed, hypothesis 1 was rejected, that from the calculation, X0.898, P 0.041 0.05. This implies that there is a significant relationship between socio-demographic characteristics of personnel of naval medical center and their awareness of AKI. Hypothesis 2 was Rejected since the calculated value X14.606 and p0.024 is less than 0.05. This implies that there is a significant relationship between the level of awareness of naval personnel on the risk factors for AKI and the indiscriminate use of nephrotoxic agents.
