Abstract
Neonatal Tetanus (NNT) remains a major public health challenge and a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in developing countries, Nigeria included despite the availability of effective Vaccines. This study, therefore, assessed the knowledge and practice of mothers on the causes and prevention of neonatal tetanus in Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital (AMTH) Ibadan of Oyo state. The instrument used was a self-structured, close-ended questionnaire using non-experimental descriptive cross-sectional method. 50 questionnaires containing24 items were administered and analyzed using descriptive statistics, tables, histograms, bar chart and inferential statistics of chi-square was used to test hypotheses. The findings revealed that 88% of the mothers had heard of NNT 36% heard from maternity health Centre, Majority (90%) of the respondents knew the cause of neonatal tetanus was due to improper cord care while (88%) said NNT was caused by failure to take immunization during pregnancy. Virtually all of the respondents (98%) heard about the immunization of pregnant women and knew NNT can be prevented. This showed the mothers had good knowledge on the causes and prevention of neonatal tetanus Practice of proper cord care was also good among the mothers 98% of them used methylated spirit to care for their baby’s umbilical cord, average number of the respondents practice hot fermentation method, moderate proportion applied chlorhexidine gel while the minority of the mothers still applied harmful substances such as ashes, alligator pepper on the cord of the baby. Hypothesis test revealed that there was no significant relationship between mother’s parity and their practice of cord care and also there was no significant relationship between mothers' level of education and knowledge of prevention.
