Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) resulting from defects in insulin secretion which is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease accounting for 20-30% of cases. Due to lack of awareness among patients with diabetes mellitus, This research study was conducted to assess the level of awareness and knowledge of diabetes as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease among patients in Bowen Hospital, Ogbomosho, using a questionnaire-based study administered to patients attending outpatient department clinic. Data analysis was done using the IBM SPSS statistical programming software and test of association between variables using chi-square and t-test as appropriate at a significance level of P 0.05. Of the 80 respondents, 36.2% are below 40 years of age, 27.5% have been managing diabetes for more than 10 years and 23% of the respondents are unmarried. 61% of the respondents are aware that long-term diabetes can cause chronic kidney disease. However, only 48% of them have good knowledge of diabetes as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease. Over 80% of them think the use of local treatment and herbs can prevent chronic kidney disease. The knowledge of the respondents about diabetes appears to play a significant role in identifying the risk factors for chronic kidney disease and its progression. Socio-demographic factors also did not seem to have any relationship with the development of risk factors for chronic kidney disease in these respondents. This study concludes that the knowledge and awareness of diabetes as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease is low. This represents a significant gap in the management of these groups of people. Urgent action is needed to raise the awareness and knowledge of patients and empower the healthcare workers....
