Abstract
This study exposed the researcher to the effect of internal control system on the operations of banks in Nigeria internal control is the whole system of financial and otherwise established by the management in order to carry out on their business of the enterprise in an orderly and efficient manner, ensure adherence to management policies, safeguard the assets and secure as far as possible the completeness and accuracy of the records. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the internal control system in First Bank of Nigeria Plc. Various concepts and theories on internal controls and other measures aimed at safeguarding the assets of the bank were reviewed from related literature. Questionnaire and interview were the major instruments of data collection. The responses of thirty (30) staff of First Bank of Nigeria Plc. Aba Branch were analyzed using simple percentage and frequency tables. The study found that efficient internal control ensures adherence to management policies and the attainment of corporate goods. The study recommended among others that there should be a clear and proper definition of duties and responsibilities to ascertain when instructions are breached and who should be held accountable.         ...
