Abstract
This study examined the reported BMI of students and problems associated with abnormal BMI among students. A random sample of 200 students was selected from the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara whose BMI was examined through data on the weight, height, age and waist circumference. The result of the study revealed that most of the students’ BMI were averagely overweighted. This implies that most of the students examined have abnormal BMI (i.e, BMI 24.9). The result also shows that, 37% of the students were overweight and about 43% were obese and extremely obese. Also, the result also shows that 45% of the students are at basic risk level, 27% are at a high risk while 6% of the students are at a very high risk (extreme risk) of experiencing type 2 diabetes, stroke or even hypertension. The study, therefore, concludes based on the findings that most individuals in our society are in health danger but lacks awareness. They seem to be physically fine but their health status may indicate otherwise. The study also concludes that BMI is an effective tool in examining health status, especially when examined with the help of waist circumference.
