Abstract
In this study, an attempt was made to examine the performance of students in junior secondary schools in Ethiope West. In an attempt to accomplish this goal, a random sample of 8 secondary schools was selected from two strata, four private schools and four public schools and furthermore, a sample of 20 students were selected from each school leading to a total sample of 160 students from which secondary data were obtained on the performance of students with credit grade for the period of 2010– 2019. The method of comparison using the Mann Whitney and the Kruskal Wallis test was applied to assess the performance of students. The result indicated that students’ performance is not dependent on the nature of the school they attend, whether public or private. The result also revealed that the performance of students is not equal for all subjects. Based on the findings of this study, it is concluded that the performance of students at Junior Secondary Certificate examinations is significantly equal for both those in private and public schools and thus their performance is independent of the nature of school they attend. It was also concluded that students have poor performance in mathematics in the junior secondary schools, in Ethiope West local government, Delta State, Nigeria....
