This project work was carried out to examine the role of computers in promoting efficiency in Nigerian commercial banks using Union Bank as a case study. The purpose of the study is to find out if it has helped to increase efficiency in banking operation, to look in to the public conception about computers to see if it was responsible for the distress of some banks in Nigeria and to find out whether computer provides more accounting information about business operation. In the course of the study, data were collected by means of questionnaires, personal interviews and observation. The result was analysed using chi-square. The tested hypothesis proved that the use of computers has a significant relationship with banks' operations efficiency. From the findings of the research and information obtained from some of the staff of Union Bank plc. who were actually interviewed, the research found the following recommendation very necessary. There are other errors detecting measures that should be built into computer programme. An example is a limit text, which should compare every item of data processing by the computer to a specified naira limit. Another one is an item count. The total number of data items to be processing by the computer is determined and that total is entered as part of the input to the computer.
