Abstract
The research study titled Analysis of filing system and consequences of misfiling patients’ health records in University of Ilorin Teaching hospital Kwara State. Filing system is an asset of documents in a prescribed order for the convenience of reference and preservation. The health record is of value to the patients, the hospital, the physicians, the researchers and for teaching. Failure by the health records officers to produce patients’ health records when needed due to misfiling will bring untold hardship on the part of the hospital and patient. Research questions were formulated based on the objectives of the study. Review of related literature and other books were carried out in order to have sound knowledge. Descriptive research design was used and the target population for the study was the staff of the health records department in the hospital. A complete sampling technique was adopted and 115 questionnaires were retrieved at the response rate of 90% through the self-administered method. The findings revealed that few units (26%) operate Alphabetical filing systems and (86%) operate straight numerical filing systems for patients health records.60% said filing environments are not suitable for filing and retrieval of patients' health records, 93% said it leads to delay of patients time and 96% said the hospital can lose valuables cost if patients' health records cannot be found due to misfiling. From respondents' view on the available solutions to the Problems of misfiling, the study recommended that all health information management personnel should be qualified staff, there should be a suitable filing environment, regular training of staff and computerization of patients'' health records to prevent misfiling of patients'' health records. ...
