Abstract
Cooperative societies in Orji-river local government contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of the communities. The cooperative does this by increasing the member income offering employment opportunities supply the member with improved farm and giving them cooperative education. Secondly, the major form of the cooperative society in Orji- river local government Area is the farmer multipurpose cooperative society. This is because farming is the predominant occupation there. The main source of finance to the cooperative societies in the area is contributed from members and that the major reason why cooperative societies find it very difficult to obtain bank loans is that they do not have collateral securities. Cooperative societies in Orji- river local government encounter a lot of problems including mismanagement of funds by the executive lack of cooperative education and poor government support. The grant given to cooperatives by the government enables them to have control over the cooperative societies in the Orji- river local government Area. ...
