Abstract
In every field of human activities, there exists a kind of language which is peculiar to a particular field. This language at times cannot be understood by the ordinary person except those in the field. The need for the people to understand this kind of language becomes necessary since speech or writing is meant to communicate, and in the course of this communication, there is the need for the hearer to grasp the intended meaning and not the received meaning. This is because without getting the intended meaning there is going to be the problem of misinterpretation. This study investigates how language is used to communicate meaning in bank advertisements. The work focus on selected banks in Daily Trust and This Day newspapers. Advertising is a form of communication used to help sell products and services.
