Abstract
This project attempts to give comprehensive information about the cooperative societies and rural development in Batagarawa Local Government Area of Katsina State. The cooperation through which cooperatives is derived from is as old mankind. Cooperative was developed and sustained since the coming together of men when they render mutual assistance to each other and make common efforts for the sake of all. But cooperation or rather cooperative society as it is today is plagued with problems that decelerate its effectiveness as a means of enhancing the socio-economic and living standards of the rural populace. The researcher undertook the study in order to ascertain the roles/impacts these cooperative societies play towards community development and to find out the existence of shortcomings and difficulties if any, in their management and to offer possible long-lasting solutions as to how best cooperative societies can be managed in best possible manner to orient and attain goals. In this research work, a total of one hundred and fifteen sample cooperative members were administered with structured questionnaire also findings reveal that almost all of the respondents have acknowledged the efficiency of cooperative societies in alleviating the economic problems in the community. Similarly, the research finding has shown that cooperative societies have problems that inhabit their effectiveness, e.g. poor financial base, high rate of illiteracy and dishonesty among members and poor organizational control, etc....
