Abstract
The study“Effect of compactive effort and suitability of borrow pit materials for sub-grade, for a soil to be used for any structural purpose or for construction, it must be compacted in order to ensure stability, to avoid settlement and also for long lasting and increase in the shear strength of the soil material. The test carried out is to determine the properties of the soil to know if they possess the required properties or if there should be any stabilization that can be done to improve its properties. The project deals on compaction of soil samples gotten from borrow pit materials using modified proctor equipment which is composed of a rammer of 4.5kg falling freely from a height of 450mm in five equal layers each having a blow 27 of which the maximum dry densities ranged and its corresponding optimum moisture contents (O.M.C) determined from the graph plotted. Also California Bearing ratio test was conducted on the compacted sample of the soil. The principle was to determine the relationship between the force and penetration when a cylindrical plunger of a standard cross-sectional area is made to penetrate through the soil at a given rate. At certain values of penetration, the ratio of the applied force to a standard force expressed as a percentage and defined as the California bearing ratio (C.B.R). KEYWORDS: Sub-grade, suitability, borrow pit, compactive effort. ...
