Abstract
This research work assessed injection safety practice in the context of infection prevention and control among healthcare workers in Tarauni LGA, Kano with the following objectives to determine the existing knowledge of health workers regarding safe injection practices, to know the preventives and control measures of unsafe injection practices for healthcare workers, patients and community and to assess the level of awareness of injection safety. It was discovered from the study that healthcare workers have adequate knowledge and on safe injection practices. Based on the findings of this study, it was discovered and concluded that most of the injections given were judged to be unnecessary due to perception and false belief among both the patients and healthcare workers that (may or may not be true) injection is more effective than oral medication. Unsafe injection is complex and fuelled by a mixture of socio-cultural, economic and structural factors, especially in low income countries. Healthcare workers have high level of knowledge about safe injection but only a small proportion actually practiced and this finding raise the need for proper training on this issue, especially among young healthcare workers. There is a need to raise awareness and consequently promote safety practices amongst both patients and healthcare workers and also the community. There is a need for effective IPC which indeed requires government interventions and collaboration with NGOs, healthcare agencies, individuals and the communities. At the end, this study provided a baseline evidence for further interventions in other to improve safety injection practices among healthcare workers in Tarauni LGA, Kano....
