This research aims to develop a barcode scanner and generator that run on android handheld devices which has image processing and barcode decoding capabilities to address the above-mentioned problem. The information stored in a Barcode can only be read with the use of a barcode reader, information stored in a Barcode include Prices of items In a supermarket, vehicle spare parts, some vital information about a mobile phone or an electronic appliance and In order to retrieve such information all you have to do is to scan the barcode with a barcode reader, the interesting part about the research is that the application developed to have the ability to both generate and also scan a barcode for only android devices. The reason for choosing an Android OS for the research includes the number of android users. The combination of black and white bars (also referred to as elements) represents different types of text characters that follow a pre-established algorithm for that barcode (more on the types of barcodes later)(Selmeier, 2020, pp. 26,214). A barcode scanner read the pattern of black and white bars and translates them into a line of text that your retail point of sale system can understand.
