Psychological effect of infertility among couples attending Gynea Clinic in Federal Medical Centre, Gusau

Abstract
The study was carried out in order to know the psychological effects of infertility among couples attending Gynae in Federal Medical Centre Gusau. Infertility whether in males or in females is a very stressful condition. It threatens many aspects of couples' life not only the partner's relationship to each other, but is also affecting them individually with friends, family and community. The purpose of the study was to find out the causes of infertility. The patients will benefit from the study if the nurses, doctors, community and government will properly utilize the findings made by the researcher. Descriptive survey design was adopted in which a total of 120 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents with the help of two trained assistants from the department of midwifery. A cut of point of 2.5 was used in which any item with 6.10 and above is considered disagreed while any item with less than 4.6 in considered disagreed. The researcher analyzed data using percentage, frequency distribution table, histogram bar chart, pie chart and means statistics method. The findings revealed that there is experience of stigma, marital problems, feelings of worthlessness and diminished self-esteem among infertile patients. In conclusion, the provision of ethical care by health workers as well as intervention by government and non-governmental organizations will help to reduce stigma experienced by patients suffering from infertility.   ...
