Abstract
This project work was conducted to assess the occurrence of compassion fatigue among Nurses in critical care units and coping strategies adopted by Nurses working in critical care units of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Kwara State. It informed the health officers on the understanding of nursing regarding the occurrence of compassion fatigue among Nurses in critical care units and coping strategies in the hospital. Among the objectives is to determine the influence of age on the occurrence of compassion fatigue among Nurses of critical care units at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and to determine the influence of years of experience on the occurrence of compassion fatigue in Nurses in critical care units at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Furthermore, to assess coping strategies adopted by Nurses towards compassion fatigue in critical care units at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research uses descriptive survey to sample staff of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 78 questionnaires were distributed out of which 75 were retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that the government should make it a top priority to make staff members'' access to the resources and supports currently available for nurses' well-being and mental health. These resources might consist of promoting the availability of counseling services, employee benefits, and contact information for various support services and the provision of proper incentives that promotes nurses’ dignity. And lastly, there is the need to modify the shift pattern in critical care units so as to allow the nurses to have enough relaxation after the shift, thus avoiding the development of compassionate fatigue. ...
