Abstract
The research work was carried out among pregnant women on knowledge and practice of postnatal exercise among mothers in selected health care centers in Ilorin West Local government Area of Kwara State. The objective of the study was to access the knowledge and practice of postnatal exercise and also to identify factors influencing the practice of postnatal exercise among mothers in selected healthcare centers. The research was a quantitative design using the multistage method and samples were derived using Taro Yamane formula to get a total sample size of 106 while multistage sampling techniques were adopted to calculate the total number of respondents from each healthcare Centre. The instrument for data collection was self-structured questionnaire that consist of 25 items. A total number of 106 questionnaires were filled and returned. This was then subjected to statistical analysis using frequency tables, percentages, bar charts and chi-square to test the hypotheses. This study showed that 83.9% of the respondents had adequate knowledge of postnatal exercise while 16.1% of the respondents had no knowledge of postnatal exercise. Findings from the study also reveal that 93% of the respondent do not practice postnatal exercise while 7% practice postnatal exercise. Based on these results, recommendations were made that healthcare workers should encourage pregnant mothers on the importance of doing postnatal exercise, and also the government should make provision for the sensitization about postnatal exercise through mass media as a means of encouragement.
