Abstract
Burden of care is a rampant case in most lives of patients’ relatives in the country with little or no end in sight, the relative’s knowledge about the burden of care and effective application of their coping strategies helps in controlling these prevailing circumstances. This project work, therefore, examined the Burden of care and Coping strategies among relatives of patients with breast cancer at the University of Ilorin teaching hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State. It also informed the health officers on the need for reduction of burden of care and Identification of coping strategies. Among the objectives is to determine the burden of care and coping strategies among relatives of patients with breast cancer in the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Ilorin Kwara state. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research used descriptive survey to sample 48 relatives of patients with breast cancer at UITH, Ilorin, Kwara State. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 48 questionnaires were distributed out of which 47 were retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that the nurses should focus on educating relatives about the burden of care and how they can effectively cope with it. Also, awareness/enlightenment campaigns on the burden of care and coping strategies should be organized. Finally, there is a need for nurses to enlighten patients in the hospital on the importance of assisting relatives and reducing the burden of care on their relatives and the factors responsible for it.
