Abstract
The study examined Owerri residents’ awareness and perception of media messages against Female Genital Mutilation(FGM). The objective of the study is to find out the effectiveness of media messages in generating awareness and knowledge on the effects of Female Genital Mutilation. The study adopted the survey method of data collection. The sample size of 400 was determined for the study using Taro Yamane’s formula. The findings from the study show that the awareness level of the prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practice is very high among those practicing it, their view that FGM is an unhealthy practice notwithstanding. It was concluded that FGM is an evil barbaric act that should be abolished, as it has no positive impact(s). Rather, its negative effects are enormous and out-weighs any possible positive impact. However, it was recommended that local dialect should be employed to ensure that media messages on FGM achieve their purpose among rural dwellers who may have difficulty understanding messages in English and the media should add more educative programmes on the need to abolish FGM on audio-visual channels on our television. ...
