Abstract
The bacterial activity of Aframomum melegueta was tested on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Klebsiella species (Klebsiella Spp.), and Salmonella species (Salmonella Spp). Distilled water was used as solvent for the extraction of the plant. The zones of inhibition of the bacterial isolate are 17mm,16.5mm,13mm and 10.5mm respectively. The phytochemcial analysis carried out on Aframomum melegueta revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponin, steroids, reducing sugar and flavonoid. The presence of these phytochemcials support the use of this plant as antibacterial agent. Aframomum melegueta can therefore be used as antibacterial agent against the groups of bacteria tested. Onion (Allium cepa) is among the oldest cultivated plants and is used for multiple purposes. In addition to its nutritional effects, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of onion have also been postulated, and continue to be extensively investigated. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the possible antibacterial effects of onion on some bacterial isolates. The onion was prepared in water extraction form. Bacterial isolates were tested. These tested bacteria include Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Klebsiella species (Klebsiella Spp.), and Salmonella species (Salmonella Spp.).The zones of inhibition of the bacterial isolates are 17mm,16.5mm,13mm and 10.5mm respectively. phytochemical analysis carried out on onion extract shows the presence of saponins, flavonoids, reducing sugar and tanins which support the use of onion as an antibacterial agent....
